Each April, National Fair Housing Month is celebrated to reaffirm our commitment to ending housing discrimination and commemorate the passage of the federal Fair Housing Act in 1968, which prohibits discrimination in the sale or rental of housing on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability. Here are a few ways you can get involved this Fair Housing Month:
Participate in Fair Housing Month of Action
For the past three years and counting, the Fair Housing Center for Rights & Research has celebrated Fair Housing Month of Action – our own take on Fair Housing Month, dedicated not only to learning about fair housing, but to taking action to advance fair and equitable housing opportunities. If you haven’t already, check out thehousingcenter.org/action for weekly challenges, resources, and engaging activities throughout the month of April. Be sure to also follow us on social media and subscribe to our email list, so you don’t miss out on any of the action. Here’s a sneak peek of our weekly themes throughout the month:
- Week One: The History of Redlining
- Week Two: Disability Rights in Housing
- Week Three: Sundown Towns
- Week Four: Housing is Healthcare
Whether you’re a seasoned fair housing advocate, or someone who is just getting started, we invite you to take part in Fair Housing Month of Action!
Check out a book from our 2026 Fair Housing Reading List
Each April, The Fair Housing Center releases a newly revised Fair Housing Reading List, which contains nearly 50 titles that tackle important topics relating to fair housing, inequality, and discrimination. From children’s books celebrating diversity to more advanced reading detailing the history of racist ideas in America, there’s something on the list for everyone in the family. We encourage you to check your local library or favorite independent bookstore for these titles, and hope you will join us in celebrating Fair Housing Month by reading about these important topics! Support fair housing
We are only able to continue providing fair housing assistance and education with the help and support of our community. As a nonprofit organization, individual donations from community members keep us afloat and allow us to continue working tirelessly to protect the rights of our neighbors. Click here to support fair housing!
No matter how you choose to get involved this month, we hope that you will gain insight into the importance of fair housing and look for ways to remain involved in the fight for fair housing. Anyone can be an advocate for housing justice, and we need all the support we can get to work towards making fair housing a reality for all people. Together, we can continue working to build fair and equitable communities in Northeast Ohio.
