What if the Zebras Lost Their Stripes? – A Review

John Reitano’s What if the Zebras Lost Their Stripes? allows kids to explore racial diversity by imagining what might happen if zebras lost their stripes, resulting in some animals becoming all-black and others all-white. Reitano asks, “What if the Zebras lost their stripes, and some lost black and some lost white? Would they think that it’s all right? Or would the Zebras start to fight?”

By questioning whether black and white zebras would allow their differences to divide them, or if they would live together in harmony, this book gets kids thinking about the importance of diversity, acceptance, and anti-racism. Through the use of humor, rhymes, and bold pictures, the author makes these advanced concepts easy to understand for even your youngest readers!

Third-grader Andrew English, The Fair Housing Center’s “Jr. Guest Blogger”, leaves us with this book review:

“The book was about how zebras are signs to the world that black and white people shouldn’t be separated but united. It shows how it doesn’t matter what race you are. You can still be friends. To me, this book is a lesson that this is how the world should be.”
