Fair Housing Center for Rights & Research Celebrates Court Ruling Blocking HUD’s Fair Housing Grant Terminations
Following a recent court ruling, Judge Richard G. Stearns of the U.S. District Court in the District of Massachusetts granted a temporary injunction stopping the termination of 78 federal fair housing grants to fight housing discrimination. On March 13, 2025, the lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court in the District of Massachusetts, on behalf of a proposed class of more than 60 fair housing groups whose grants were abruptly terminated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) at the behest of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The Fair Housing Center was one of four lead Plaintiffs in the case. In their brief to the court, Plaintiffs argued that HUD cannot terminate a grant merely because a recipient program carries out activities mandated by the statute.
In response, Carrie Pleasants, Executive Director, Fair Housing Center for Rights & Research released the following statement:
“This ruling is a significant victory for fair housing and puts a stop to HUD’s termination of critical grants aimed at combating housing discrimination. We are grateful for the court’s decision as these grants are vital to organizations like ours working tirelessly to promote fair housing. The Fair Housing Center is committed to continuing its efforts to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to secure fair and equitable housing without fear of discrimination.”
