Bureau Warns Lenders Against Creating Illegal Hurdles for Recipients of Social Security Disability Income

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is issuing a bulletin to help lenders avoid imposing illegal burdens on consumers receiving disability income who apply for mortgages. The CFPB is reminding lenders that requiring unnecessary documentation from consumers who receive Social Security disability income may raise fair lending risk. Today’s bulletin calls attention to standards and guidelines that may help lenders comply with the law, and help ensure that recipients of Social Security disability income receive fair and equal access to credit.

Join the Housing Center at Brush Strokes for Equality!

Please join us for the Housing Center’s 2014 Fair Housing Celebration, Brush Strokes for Equality, on Tuesday, April 29, 2014. The event kicks off at 5pm with a Dedication Ceremony to celebrate the installation of the Housing Center’s public mural at Six Chimneys Apartments (3907 Prospect Avenue). The ceremony will be followed by a reception with the mural artists and a community conversation at Trinity Commons (2230 Euclid Avenue) starting at 6pm. We have a dynamic line-up of panelists for the conversation including Katherine Chilcote (Building Bridges), Shani Meeks (Friend of the Housing Center), Mike Pistorino (C&M Consulting), Daniel J. Rice (HELP Foundation, Inc.), and Julia Shearson (CAIR Ohio, Cleveland Chapter). The discussion will be moderated by The Honorable Peter Lawson Jones. Housing Center Evolves to Meet Needs

The Housing Center welcomed new staff and improved services to meet the increased demand for fair housing services over the last year. In 2013, the Housing Center conducted over 400 audits for housing discrimination; hosted 52 fair housing training sessions (attended by 1,434 people); tabled 23 community outreach events; and released six research reports.

Housing Center to Host Youth Art Contest

The Housing Research & Advocacy Center is looking for Cuyahoga County students in 4th through 8th grades to participate in a youth art exhibition sponsored by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Students are asked to watch the Community video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUs2pXsBOe8) and submit one original work of art (e.g. drawing, painting, photo, collage, etc.) that promotes fair housing and answers the question: What makes your community great, and how can you contribute to it by being a good neighbor? Works of art should be accompanied by a brief explanation of how the art relates to theme of diverse communities and being a good neighbor. Prizes will be awarded based on creativity, relevancy, message clarity and overall presentation. Submissions must be in the Housing Center offices by 4:00 pm Monday, March 26, 2012. First place winner will receive $500. All winners will receive their prizes and have their works displayed at the 7th Annual Fair Housing Celebration & Art Exhibition on April 12, 2012 at Cleveland State University’s Student Center Ballroom, 2121 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. Individuals receiving Honorable Mentions may also have their work displayed at the event. Contest limited to residents of Cuyahoga County. See below for more details.
